Registration now open! June 11 - 14th, 2023
Photograph during Maine’s peak Moose viewing season in beautiful Baxter State Park, the nationally significant Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument and along the fabled Golden Road in the Katahdin Region of Maine with Maine photography workshop leader Anita Mueller during this Mark Picard Wildlife Photography sponsored workshop and tour - now in their 17th year!
All skill levels welcome! Regardless of your current skill level, you are guaranteed to learn new techniques while photographing both on land and on the water via kayak (flat water only, no prior kayak experience is necessary) as well as by pontoon boat in the most remote and picturesque locations within the Katahdin Region of Maine. Katahdin Region photography workshop leader and wildlife photographer Anita Mueller will teach you all the techniques and tricks she has learned photographing the wildlife and beauty of Maine’s North Woods – many of which she has learned from partner Mark Picard. Expect to learn more than you thought possible about wildlife photography including anticipating subject movement and behavioral patterns of animals including Moose.
Spring Photography Workshop
Mid to late June in Baxter State Park, Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, and the Katahdin Region in general, provides opportunities to photograph a world coming to life after a long winter. Picturesque indigenous wildflowers, rushing waterways, boreal birds, as well as other flora and fauna, including Moose and their newborn calves, provide abundant inspiration and opportunities to learn new photography skills. Depending on the weather workshop week, plan to photograph by kayak, from a pontoon boat, as well as on land during this Baxter State Park, Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument and environs Maine photography workshop. While we make no guarantees, historically we have averaged between 10 and 15 Moose sightings during the June workshop with the high being 40! For examples of subject matter photographed in June watch the video short below. Online registration is available on a first come first serve basis.
Fall Photography Workshops
NOTE: Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic and the rise of the Delta variant cases in our area, there is no Fall 2021 workshop scheduled.
The Autumn photography workshops coincide with the Fall Moose Rut and spectacular Fall Foliage that the region is noted for. Landscape photography opportunities in the Katahdin Region are magnificent and truly inspiring this time of year. We make no guarantees but this is the best time to capture the often elusive Moose in courtship and mating behavior with a backdrop of autumn color that illuminates the region each Fall. Moose are much more difficult to locate in Autumn. Not only do their habitat preferences change in the Fall, diminishing population numbers due to climate conditions make Fall Moose photography some of the most challenging wildlife photography you will experience. That being said, due to our knowledge of the Region and local network of spotters we feel we have the best advantage over other tours. Plan for one sunset cruise and one early morning cruise via pontoon boat during the Fall photography workshops affording spectacular views of Katahdin and lingering Loons. The rest of the Fall workshop is devoted to photographing and touring by van.
Package Price includes three nights lodging at the New England Outdoor Center’s Twin Pine Camps, breakfast in your cabin each morning, three picnic-style lunches, three dinner meals provided by the acclaimed River Driver Restaurant, snacks, kayak rental, pontoon boat reservations, as well as expert photography instruction and guiding. Due to COVID-19, lodging consists of spacious modern cabins either shared at a discount (with a traveling partner) or, single occupancy for those traveling solo. To ensure individual instruction and adequate social distancing, registration is limited to small groups with participants driving their own vehicles to and from shooting locations.

Anita, Thank you so much for the wonderful experience that we had in Maine last week!! Your attention to detail, generosity and well planned itinerary all contributed to a photo workshop experience that was not only great fun but resulted in some potentially award winning photos. I wish I could give you some constructive criticism but I can’t because I enjoyed it all. Take care and thank you both for all that you did to insure we got great photos and had a memorable experience. Maine is a gorgeous state and I am grateful for the opportunity to fully immerse myself in its beauty. I can’t wait to come back, hopefully this fall. Danielle, Connecticut
